Frequently Asked Questions about Pet Travel

Manhattan is a city of people always on the go, and if taking your pet with you is a priority, you’re likely to have some questions about travel issues with pets. Here are some answers from our New York City (NYC) veterinarian at City Pets Vets to help ease the transition.

Pet Travel FAQs

Should I Get a Vet Check?

A wellness check is easy and convenient with our in-home house calls for veterinary services in Manhattan. A health certificate may be required, depending on your travel plan. We’ll give you copies for your records and one to add to your boarding documents or pet carrier.

What Rules Should I Know about Traveling with Pets?

If you request a house call with our in home vet, we can guide you in learning what each mode of travel has for sure pets. For example, airlines, bus, and train travel have specific policies concerning animals on board.

Generally, pets need certificates of vaccination, good health, and over 12 weeks of age. In addition, your pet will often require a good supply of food and water, a carrier, and a leash for safety purposes. Be sure to clearly label your contact info on the page and put a note stating “Live Animal.”

How Should I Handle Food and Water on Travel Day?

Our NYC veterinarian recommends avoiding giving your furry friends an excess of food or water approximately several hours before the travel time. Potty breaks can be tricky during air travel, and even stopping at roadway respites may trigger some animals.

What Time Frame to Have When Traveling by Air or Public Transit?

Get to the departure destination at least an hour before the recommended time, and make it known when you check in to let the staff know that a pet will accompany you. Do your best to keep pets, especially dogs, as active as possible before departure to help them feel less stressed during the journey.

Should I Get an ID Tag or Microchip for My Pets before Travel?

Microchips and identification tracking devices are affordable and can help keep track of your pet if you get separated. Some pets get adventurous or just nervous when traveling, so having a backup to help keep them located can be a lifesaver.
